Kostroma

The name of the city originated from the old tradition of celebrating Kostroma’s funerals. Kostroma is the name of thatch effigy symbolizing spring. Kostroma was sung and danced in a ring, then it was burnt or drown. The ceremony of Kostroma funerals signified the beginning of summer and was very popular among the Slavs.
