Famous
Rostov bell chimes. The Belfry of the Dormition Cathedral
was built in the second half of the XVII century. Thirteen
bells were mounted in the belfry. They were famous for their
melody and wonderful harmony. the notes of the three big
bells sound as a correct major chord. The rest of the bells
(except "Gologar") are in harmony with the first
ones, with very small divergence. The bell chime was said
to be head within eighteen kilometres distance.
Originally the belfry had three bays. Some years later the
fourth high bay for the greatest bell "Sisoi"
weighing 32 tons was built at the north side of the belfry.
According to the inscription made on the bell it is produced
in 1689 by the master Frol Terentjev. The bell was named
"Sisoi" in the honour of the builder of the Kremlin
Iona Sisoevich.
